STUDENT FEEDBACKS

Joshua K Selvan

Research Topic : Role of mismatch repair gene hMSH2 in malignant glioma

“Began the research mentorship with no prior experience at all in research and publications. Dr. Manuel was incredibly helpful in teaching me the fundamentals of research and mentoring me through the publication process. Throughout the research process, I never stopped learning about glioblastoma and scientific research. I was very happy to see the article published as it represents the first major step in my journey of research. It really helped me get my foot in the door for future research conducted at the university level.”

Kim Lee

Research Topic : Novel Biomarkers in MRN Complex and Inflammatory CCL Genes in Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma

“I worked with Dr. Manuel in 2021 and 2024 as a postgraduate medical student and my experience has been exceptional! As part of my 2-month virtual research internship, Dr. Manuel has taken the time to teach me about biomedical sciences, translational cancer research, and the basics of R.

With his mentorship and guidance, I was able to complete my head and neck cancer research project and prepare a poster for presentation at research conferences. Dr. Manuel is an excellent research mentor who advocates for his mentees’ success, and I highly recommend uMaster for students who are interested in pursuing research with potential publication opportunities..”

Purvi Shah

Research Topic : Role of nuclear lamin in Parkinson’s

“Being part of the mentoring program at uMaster with Dr. Jeru Manuel has been an amazing experience. The program is really unique because it lets students like me create our own research projects from scratch, starting with forming our own hypotheses.

It’s great because we get the freedom to work on something we’re genuinely interested in, which isn’t something you always get to do in schools or universities. Personally, I found it really exciting to learn how to do research on my own. I finally got to put all the theory I’ve been learning into practice, and that’s something I’ve always felt was missing in my education.

Dr. Manuel was super helpful throughout the process—he patiently helped me shape my hypothesis and answered all my questions, no matter how small. He really put in the effort to make sure my project was the best it could be and taught me all the research methods I needed to know.

This program has given me a lot of confidence in my research skills, and I’d definitely recommend it to anyone who’s looking to take their academic journey to the next level..”
